City and Leipzig Region - Top 3 places in fDi ranking

Leipzig, 15 February 2024, The city of Leipzig and the Leipzig region have achieved outstanding results in the "European Cities and Regions of the Future 2024" ranking by fDi Intelligence, a trade magazine published by the British Financial Times. The ranking assesses the most promising investment locations across Europe in various categories. In the FDI strategy category (strategy for attracting investment), the city of Leipzig made it into the top 3 in the "Mid-Sized European Cities" category and the Leipzig region, represented by Invest Region Leipzig GmbH (IRL) in the "Small European Regions" category. As the economic development agency for the city and district of Leipzig, IRL carries out location marketing and identifies and supports companies interested in relocating to the region as they expand.

"The good ranking is a sign of Leipzig's positive development and confirms the path we have taken. Leipzig is growing continuously. Our economy is stable on several pillars: premium automotive, European energy trading centre and strong research in health and biotechnology. This makes us strong and resilient, which is impressively demonstrated by our stable upward trend in recent years," says Clemens Schülke, Mayor and Alderman for Economic Affairs, Labour and Digital Affairs of the City of Leipzig.

"Being among the top 3 is an important recognition and confirmation of our successful strategy for the Leipzig region. Our region combines innovation and economic strength in an outstanding way," commented Henry Graichen, District Administrator of the Leipzig district.

Strong arguments in favour of the city and region of Leipzig

The attractiveness of the city and region of Leipzig, coupled with a dynamic education and research landscape that produces excellently trained specialists, are the key factors behind the outstanding rankings. As a central infrastructure hub with one of the largest freight airports in Europe and one of the three global DHL hubs, the region offers optimal conditions for companies. This aspect is being further developed and the Leipzig region stands out as one of the few European cities that continues to offer plenty of room for growth close to a major city.

The decision by mytheresa, one of the world's leading e-commerce platforms for luxury fashion, to build a new logistics centre in Leipzig is a prime example of how the Leipzig region supports growing companies in their expansion with attractive properties and conditions. The focus is also on sustainability, as the current development of the Green Business Park in Zwenkau, a town in the district of Leipzig, shows - here, future-oriented sectors such as energy and environmental technology or the semiconductor industry are being addressed in particular.

Leipzig and the region on the way to becoming a top investment location:

"Leipzig and the region are focussing on sustainable growth. Competitive prices and the continuous development of commercial space ensure our attractiveness. The rankings confirm our commitment as a top investment location," says Michael Körner, Managing Director of the IRL.

The award ceremony will take place on 12 March 2024 as part of the international real estate trade fair MIPIM in Cannes.
