Climate protection: Leipzig receives the European Energy Award in gold

Leipzig has particularly distinguished itself with sustainable mobility in the administration (e-cars, car sharing, bicycle fleet), the cooperation with chambers and associations, municipal buildings in passive house standard, and the installation of a climate protection control centre an energy team.

Burkhard Jung, Lord Mayor of the City of Leipzig, is delighted about the award. It shows that Leipzig is setting a perfect example in terms of climate protection.” The direct and indirect effects of climate change with storms or global refugee flows are now being felt in Leipzig too. We are responsible for managing both global and local levels by noticeably reducing our greenhouse gas emissions over the next few years. This requires a joint effort Action in our city. “

Environment Mayor Heiko Rosenthal: “The city has been actively committed to a climate-conscious city for a long time. With the energy and climate protection program adopted in 2014, we have paved Leipzig’s path in climate protection and have now implemented many of our planned measures. We consider the EEA Gold award to be an intermediate goal on the way to reducing overall city carbon dioxide emissions to an acceptable level of 2.5 tons per capita per year by 2050. We continue to need sustainable solutions in the transport and energy sectors to keep Leipzig a liveable city. In order to cope with the enormous tasks in climate protection that lie ahead of us, we require the support of all actors.”

Energy and climate protection program 2014-2020
The “Energy and Climate Protection Program, 2014-2020” was adopted in 2014 as a guideline for urban activities, including a plan of measures to achieve the above-mentioned objective. The city of Leipzig controls the implementation with the close support of the Leipziger Gruppe, the Leipziger Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft, the chambers, as well as associations and universities. The Leipzig Climate Conference follows this, where a joint target agreement between the city and stakeholders in urban society will be drawn up for the coming years.

Leipzig Climate Conference
At the first Leipzig Climate Conference of the City of Leipzig and the Local Agenda 21 on November 6, 2017, randomly selected citizens to discuss with the administration, city councils, companies, associations, research institutions, churches and associations which measures are in the current energy and climate protection program of the City of Leipzig are particularly important and must be promoted more strongly. The occasion of the event is the World Climate Conference of the United Nations, which is starting simultaneously. Bonn and Leipzig were awarded the European Energy Award in gold. Mayor Burkhard Jung will accompany the event with an opening lecture.
