Energy & environmental technology
Well-conceived energy concepts
Leading companies from the energy and environmental industry are based in the Region of Leipzig. Among them is the highest-grossing eastern German company, Verbundnetz Gas AG, as well as the European Energy Exchange. Verbundnetz Gas AG is a gas importer and wholesaler which has also held its own licences for oil and gas production in the Norwegian continental shelf and the Danish Sea for some years now. The European Energy Exchange has meanwhile grown to become the most important energy trade location in Europe and deals in futures for electricity as well as gas contracts and CO² certificates.
The Stadtwerke Leipzig (a public utility company) stands for modern energy supply within the region. Moreover, Verbio AG, a listed biofuel producer, also has its company domicile in Leipzig. The portfolio is completed with important service providers such as the Energy2market consultancy or the Mibrag mining group, which operates opencast mines in the area south of Leipzig. With a turnover of more than €4 billion, the municipal utility group is also a considerable economic factor.
The German Biomass Research Centre creates perspectives for the industrial-scale use of biomass in order to supply safe energy. Teams of researchers work on complex environmental situations at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The processes which are developed there are available via technology transfer for practical use all over the world.
The areas of energy and environmental technology offer investors a wide field of activity in the Region of Leipzig. The Region of Leipzig has been a model region for electromobility since 2010. Large fleets of electric and hybrid vehicles are on duty every day in Leipzig’s transport companies and other municipal companies. These vehicles prove the practicality of the new propulsion technology and, in collaboration with renowned scientific and research facilities, they provide valuable insights into the mobility of the future. The Schaufenster Bayern/Sachsen (Bavarian/Saxon showcase) has been giving a glimpse of the perspectives of electromobility since 2012. The Region of Leipzig is making valuable contributions.
